Top 3 Historic Mactan Island Beach Attractions
After dining like a king at La Marina Restaurant and Patio in Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel in Cebu's Mactan Island or at the other premier restaurants in the Queen City of the South, here are more places you should visit.
1. Lapu-Lapu Shrine
Standing proud at 20 m is a bronze statue of Lapu-Lapu, a Filipino leader who fought against the invading Spanish colonizers led by Portuguese-born Ferdinand Magellan. The statue of the Mactan Island chieftain is said to stand on the very ground where Magellan died. According to history, when Magellan landed on Philippine shores, he had a friendly encounter with the rajas of Homonhon and Cebu, who then converted to Christianity. Lapu-Lapu, though, stood his ground. Together at the Battle of Mactan in 1521, Magellan and the rajas combined forces to square off against Lapu Lapu, but retreated after the European explorer was killed. Lapu-Lapu's resistance against foreign forces is the reason why Lapu-Lapu is considered the first Filipino hero. Every year, the Battle of Mactan is reenacted on this very spot.
2. Magellan Monument
A few meters from the statue is a shrine dedicated to Magellan, the same Portuguese explorer who introduced Christianity and the Sto. Niño to the Philippines. Built in 1866 by the Spanish-Colonial rulers, the Magellan Monument has 4 sides, each with its own unique feature. The first side has Magellan's name in its original Portuguese spelling, another is dedicated to the 'Spanish Glory.' The third has the name of the Spanish Governor of the Philippines while the monument was being built, Don Miguel Creuz, while the fourth side is a dedication to Queen Isabel II, the Spanish monarch at the time.
3. Mactan Island Aquarium
Mactan Island offers a notably vivid marine life, most of which can be seen from Mactan Island Aquarium. It's a good place for divers and non-divers alike to learn about the underwater scene in Mactan. It also offers highly informative and enjoyable guided tours for those with kids. The Mactan Island Aquarium, in fact Visayas region's first public aquarium, has recently joined forces with Nalasuan Island Marine Sanctuary and moved to Maribago, closer to a number of beaches and clubs in Cebu. At the end of the guided tours, children are given the opportunity to feed blacktip reef sharks, one of the aquarium's highlights.
Of course, aside from these historical and informative sites, there are plenty of attractions that one could visit when in Mactan Island in Cebu. After an informative afternoon at the Aquarium, it's a good idea to take a dip in the sea yourself as there are plenty of resorts surrounding the area, such as Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel.

5 Things You Can Do in Ubud Without Spending a Dime
If you are in Ubud, Bali and the only thing you can afford is a couple of nights stay at the Hotel Tjampuhan Spa, don’t be discouraged. This Indonesian town offers various interesting activities that will make your trip more fun, and without even spending a single cent. During your visit, step out of your Ubud, Bali accommodation and put these 5 items in your itinerary:
1. Admire the local art
Ubud is considered as the village of artists in Bali, you won’t have a hard time finding local and foreign painters who are active in the Balinese art scene. There are several large museums here that ask around IDR50.000 for entry fees (USD6). If you are a budget traveler, though, this may put a dent in your pocket. Good thing there are many smaller and private-owned galleries like the Neka and the Agung Rai Museum of Art that have no entrance fees.
2. Learn about traditional weaved textiles
A non-profit organization called Threads of Life helps local textile weavers earn a living and keep this traditional custom alive at the same time. They have a gallery in Jalan Kajeng, a few minutes north of Ubud, which offers excellent displays of fabrics from each area of Indonesia. There are educational videos being played there that show how cotton is made into threads for weavings.
3. Put your name on Signature Street
At first look, the place called Signature Street looks like a road vandalized by countless travelers that have set foot in Ubud over the years. But in reality, it is actually the local counterpart for Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. But instead of celebrities, anybody can engrave his or her name or leave a mark on the asphalt without having to pay for it.
4. Hang out by the gorgeous Water Palace
Water Palace is one of Ubud’s many temples. Here, you will feel like you are in an Indiana Jones movie because of the ancient cinematic surroundings. The temple’s carved wooden facade, stone temple guardians, and lotus-filled ponds are a sight to see. Everything here is photo-worthy, so make sure your camera’s battery are fully charged before you leave your hotel in Ubud, Bali.
5. Attend a cremation ceremony
If you are interested in learning more about the local culture, attend a cremation ceremony if you get the chance. Quietly observe the different rituals the locals perform for their deceased relatives. The cremations feature colorful statues that will be set on fire as part of the priest’s routine. Just remember to be respectful, discreet in taking pictures, and put your mobile phone on silent mode until you head back to your room at Hotel Tjampuhan Spa.

All travelers need to do is to click the “Reserve Now” button found on the left side of the screen. This will direct them to a page where they can indicate their arrival and departure dates. This action will help guests determine the room type that suits their needs.
Room types appear on the next page along with their inclusive amenities, availability, and nightly rates. Special packages, when offered, are also displayed here. Once guests have chosen their accommodation, they will be taken to a page wherein they give information such as name and credit card data. These will be needed, as all reservations made through this booking engine will require a 10% deposit. Users do not have to worry because all transactions are certified by Trustwave and secured by VeriSign. Once the deposit has been made, guests will receive an e-mail confirmation stating the reservation details, and which completes the booking process.
